I have been drawing and painting for many years, being mainly self taught, though I have attended a number of courses, most recently Life classes at Cumbria Institute of the Arts. My speciality, however, is the drawing and water colour painting of buildings. For two successive years I did pen and ink drawings of townscapes for a Cockermouth calendar, and have regularly exhibited pencil and water colour paintings of Cumbrian towns and villages.
In recent years most of my work has been the result of commissions to portray individual buildings. I have done hotels for advertising brochures, schools for retiring teachers and churches as wedding presents and have been surprised by the range of reasons for people wishing to have an art record of their own 'homes. On some occasions they've been reminders for those moving away, on others simply a present from one family member to another. Wherever possible I work "on site" but when this has proved impossible, I have been asked to work from photographs. Perhaps this is one answer to the question: " Why bother with a painting when you can have a perfectly good photograph?"
